BORA BORA, FRENCH POLYNESIA

                                                          Bora Bora, French Polynesia
Bora Bora is an island in the leeward group of the Society Islands of French Polynesia.  As you may be able to tell in the NASA photo that I have attached below, the island is surrounded by a lagoon and barrier reef.  In the center of the island there are two peaks from an extinct volcano and the highest point is 2400 feet.

Bora Bora has a permanent population of nearly 9,000.  It is a major international tourist destination and known for it luxury resorts.  Today the island's economy is driven solely by tourism.
Most of the resorts feature over water bungalows built on stilts in the lagoon.  Snorkeling and scuba diving in the lagoon are popular activities.
Without doubt this is the most beautiful island we have visited on this cruise.  The Hawaiian Islands cannot come close this fantastic island.  The many different colors of the water are amazingly breath taking and mesmerizing.  I was out on our balcony this morning as we sailed in past the stunning barrier reef and into the lagoon.  We are anchored in the lagoon just in front of the picturesque peaks.  I was suppose to go on a 2 1/2 hour "Le Truck" tour at 2:00 pm but have decided to stay on the ship where it is cool.  It is 86F with 65% humidity.  The "truck" is NOT air conditioned and the seats are hard.  We were suppose to do this same tour back in 2010 on our World Cruise but cancelled it then too.  Here are the photos I took from the ship.  I'm sorry because they just cannot capture the true beauty that our eyes are seeing today.

Waves breaking on the coral barrier reef surrounding the island.  We are going through pass and entering the lagoon.

We are now anchored and this is view from front of the ship

This is the Paul Gauguin cruise ship and just cruises these islands year round.
Name of this village is Vaitape with 5000 inhabitants.
This morning I packed my bags while Rebecca worked out.  I am taking the day off from working out.  Rebecca is packing this afternoon.  Only one person can pack at a time due to limited space.  We have to have our luggage sitting out in hallway by 11:00 pm so they can position it for off loading early tomorrow morning.  We hope to be off the ship by 6:00 am as our flight is at 8:25 am.
It will be an 8 hour flight from Tahiti to LA.  We have to sit there for 5 hours as our flight to DFW is not until midnight.  We are scheduled to land at DFW at 5:00 am Monday.
So for this evening there is to be a local Tahitian Folkloric Show at 5:30 in the showroom.  I understand that 20 locals will be coming on for this show.  The ship is not sailing until 7:00 pm.  It is 140 miles from here to Papeete, Tahiti, our final stop.  For our "Last Supper" (we call the last night's dinner on cruises this), we will be joining an older gentleman, John, and another couple, Jeff & Alana, for dinner.  These folks are usually at bar with us in evenings.  I have asked the chef to prepare two special things for us this evening:  French fried soft shell crabs for the appetizer and Miso sea bass as entree.  I think I am only one who likes the crabs though.  The head waiters love it when I order extra as they get to eat it then.  There is another show at 9:30 but not sure if we will go or not.  We will have to get up at 4:00 AM!!!
Tonight is a sad night for us as we will have to say good bye to all our crew member friends. We have sailed 7000 miles from LA to Tahiti.  There will be one more posting after this one.  When we get back home, I will describe our journey back.  We have not flown on Air Tahiti Nui airline before.  We have business class seats so the 8 hour flight shouldn't be too bad.
